My Little Pianist

My daughter has been taking piano lessons for about six months now and, so far, she has been progressing so much! She breezed through beginner’s classes to seriously take up the first level. She’s now a few weeks away towards Level 2. I am so proud of her, considering I tried learning piano when I was at her age and I didn’t really like it. My daughter practices on her own every day and can’t wait until her studio sessions start.

Not having a penchant for piano back then, I learned to play the drums instead. My mom, ever so supportive, got me a drum set that I could practice with. However, it was one of those cheaper kinds that didn’t really have the sound of, say Crush Drums.

Anyway, at least I learned the basics and I can’t wait until I finally play percussion background to my little soon-to-be concert pianist.

My Little Skater

My daughter has been taking skating lessons since last September and I can tell you that I am so very proud of her progress! The last time I ice skated was 25 years ago and the fear of falling down again on my tooshie scares me out of the frozen pond every time. Fortunately, my daughter has no such worries. She took to the ice like a pro, albeit falling down a few times herself sometimes.

Hockey player or figure skater? Hmmm. That one’s up for a major debate. :)

My Good-Looking Lawn Mower

Summer. We’ve been waiting for it for a while now, especially since the past winter has been so brutal. Unfortunately for my husband, though, when his snow shoveling duties ended, his lawn mowing duties began. :)

We bought this mower from Lowe’s a few weeks back mainly because it was cheap and it also went on sale that week. As first time mowers, the sales people there were very helpful in helping us choose a good first mower. However, although this particular model was okay enough for small jobs (which we thought our lawn was), my hubby quickly realized the advantage of having a more powerful motor, an easier to adjust grass-cutting height, a mulching option, a bag, as well as one that was cordless. Anyway, next time we come across some Lowe’s coupons, we are definitely getting a much better one.

PS. My husband will now be spared of any more mowing or shoveling since we’ve now moved into a condo community where they take care of all that stuff. :) Yey!

Look Who’s Here

My mom arrived a couple of days ago to spend a few months with us here in Calgary. Like reliable custom laptops, she’s sure to be a huge help to me especially since I’m about to give birth any time now. I have tasked her to take care of my 7-year old who is also actually quite excited to have her grandma around. It’s my mom’s first time in cool Canada so she’s also quite excited as well. Hopefully, spring will be nice to us so we could take her around comfortably around town.

Welcome, Mommy!

Fire and Ice

To celebrate the coming of the New Year, my family and I drove downtown to participate in the Fire and Ice Event at the Calgary Olympic Plaza. We were hoping to catch the fireworks display later on, but in the meantime, we had fun with the activities the city had in store for the visitors.

Welcome 2011!

Fabulous ice sculptures galore!

Ice sculptor on-site.

My daughter was mesmerized by the guest figure-skaters. After being inspired by the skaters, I guess she won’t be aiming for health care jobs now.

Here’s us working on some crafts (if only to escape the -18C temp outside, hehe!). The finished product was a Christmas lantern.

While waiting for the fireworks, we had dinner first at Milestones Grill + Bar. The details of our meal could be found here at my other blog. We enjoyed our meal so much that we actually missed the fireworks, hehe!

It was a cold night indeed but our memories of our first new year in Calgary will always be a warm one.

My Little Goalie

Here is my daughter trying on a goalie mask for size. She’s definitely had no problems getting into the swing of things here in our snowy new home. She has been asking me to teach her how to ice skate, with a goal of, I guess, becoming a hockey goalie someday. Where did she get the idea? From watching the hockey finals on TV, of course!

From badminton athlete a few months ago to hockey player now – she wants it all. As a mom, I’m going to be content to just sit back, put my Ray Bans on, and watch my daughter shine at whatever she wants to be. :)

Christmas In The Square

As we are moving out of Texas in a week, we have not even attempted to put up our own Christmas tree. That’s sad, right? What’s Christmas without a tree? :( And so, to make up for our treeless-ness, turned on our gps tracker and traveled all the way to Frisco’s Main Square to view their fabulous Lights Show. So if you wanted to know where we were last weekend, you could’ve easily found us freezing our noses off posing for the surveillance cameras over there. :)

Despite the nippy night, we still had a lot of fun viewing the lights. We only needed to tune our car radios to 99.9 FM and marveled at the lights as they danced to the holiday music. It was as if each little twinkling light had their own gps tracker too and knew precisely when to blink, it was great! Too bad my camera couldn’t really do justice to the light show, plus the poor camera’s battery also ran out so I didn’t really get to take better pictures. But at least, our friends in the picture made the memories much more unforgettable.

The Great Texas Hill Slide

Last weekend was a fun one. Initially, we were only hoping to catch the Fourth of July fireworks at Fort Worth. Inadvertently, we also got to participate in one of the most fun things we’ve ever done in a long while.

What do you think these crazy people (who all seem to be high on testosterone cream) are about to do? :)

They are all climbing up the hill and getting ready to slide down on their cardboards! :)

And here are the crazy loves of my life getting ready to join in the craziness.

One…two…threeeee!

Yey! It was really a lot of fun. :)

And you know what, we’re counted! At exactly 4:30pm, at the sound of a horn, everybody (and I mean everybody) slid down all together down the hill to make a world record attempt of “the most people sliding downhill at one time”.

Guiness notoreity, there you go!

Way Up There

This is me 525 feet above the streets of downtown Calgary. No, I am not walking on air. No matter how much whey protein powder I take, I haven’t figured out how to summon that power yet, hehe. But I am standing on a glass floor and, I have to tell you, I usually am not afraid of heights but this one did it for me. I had to psych myself up for a few minutes before I was able to step foot onto the glass. It was indeed quite the knee-buckling experience.

Best Friends

Photo of me and my bffs taken by my 5-year old daughter.

Here I am with my two best friends in high school. They were the first ever people I met up with when I arrived in Manila, September of last year. We had a blast reminiscing our old lives in high school – from meeting each other during freshman year, up to the time when we were reviewing for the NCEE (which is sort of like sat prep courses in the US, that our school makes us undergo weeks before the exams), up until the time we went to college, and our own lives after that. If anyone should ask me, I would say that my life would not be complete without these two girls by my side, it really won’t.
