Look Who’s Here

My mom arrived a couple of days ago to spend a few months with us here in Calgary. Like reliable custom laptops, she’s sure to be a huge help to me especially since I’m about to give birth any time now. I have tasked her to take care of my 7-year old who is also actually quite excited to have her grandma around. It’s my mom’s first time in cool Canada so she’s also quite excited as well. Hopefully, spring will be nice to us so we could take her around comfortably around town.

Welcome, Mommy!

Unreasonable

More Friday5!

1. What’s something you have an unreasonable fear of?
:: Rats! I just really find them creepy and wouldn’t want to be anywhere near them.

2. What’s something you have an unreasonable fondness for?
:: Babies and puppies. And nice cool nights around a warm propane fire pit.

3. What’s something you have an unreasonable disliking for?
:: People who pretend to be nice but are really rotten inside. I also dislike pedophiles but that’s a reasonable thing to think, right?

4. Who’s most likely to bring out the unreasonable in you?
:: I’m actually pretty hard to rile, but if someone were to be successful in that, it would probably be my husband. He has a way to make me lose my head sometimes, as most husbands do. :)

5. Who’s the least unreasonable person you know?
:: Me, hehe.

A Little Drizzle

More Friday5!

1. What’s your favorite thing to put chocolate syrup on?
:: Everything! Anything!

2. What’s the best thing to sprinkle cinnamon on?
:: Hot chocolate! I also love to sprinkle cinnamon over banana fritters.

3. What’s something that is made superb by a few drops of hot sauce?
:: I don’t really like hot sauce but my husband does. He puts it on everything. Give him some camouflage panties and he’ll think its the most superb thing ever, haha!

4. What’s something you do with honey?
:: I put it on my tea, or over pancakes instead of syrup, and as a face mask sometimes when my skin is dry, hehe!

5. Besides a sandwich, what’s something you put peanut butter on?
:: There’s a Filipino dish called Kare-kare and I use peanut butter to make its savory sauce.

There’s A Wriday On Your Friday

More Friday5! This week is inspired by Dr. Seuss.

1. Dr. Seuss’s first published book was And to Think That I Saw it on Mulberry Street!. What’s the most interesting thing you’ve witnessed on your street?
:: There’s a lady who, whether its blizzardy outside or many many degrees below zero, always wears a short skirt to her place of work. She walks by our front window on her way to the bus stop. Even though I have a lot of natural insulation (haha!) I could never do that! :)

2. In The 500 Hats of Bartholomew Cubbins, a boy removes his hat to pay respect to the passing king, but each hat is somehow replaced by a bigger, fancier hat. If you’re a hat person, what’s your current favorite? If not, under what circumstances did you last wear a hat?
:: I’m not a hat person but I do wear baseball caps, so I guess that would count.

3. In If I Ran the Zoo…, a boy fantasizes about how fantastic the zoo would be under his administration. What’s your local zoo like, and how do you like it?
:: Right now, we haven’t been able to explore the local zoo because it has been a very terrible winter season. Hopefully we’ll be able to do that in the spring or summer.

4. In Green Eggs and Ham, the main character refuses to taste a certain dish until, just to get Sam to leave him alone, he gives in and discovers that he likes it. When did something like this happen to you?
:: I was not a fan of Korean food but a good friend introduced it to me and now I am a believer. I could eat Hanjeongsik every day but then scam or no scam, the lipozene scams may become a reality for me.

5. The Foot Book contains a lesson about judging others based on their feet. Feet seem to be something people have widely polar opinions about! How do you feel about feet, and can you think of someone in your life who has especially nice feet?
:: Feet are not a fetish for me but I do appreciate a nice, neat, and good-smelling pair of feet. :) My daughter’s feet are nice, just because she’s still young and has had no time to develop any corns and calluses yet, haha! :)

And The Winner Is

More Friday5!

1. Who in your life should win Best Director for his or her work in 2010?
:: My husband. It’s not that I’m not being creative with my answers (haha!), but my husband has really done a great job of directing our family’s life the whole year last year. He really deserves that award and more.

2. Who in your life should win Best Actor and Actress in Supporting Roles for their performances in 2010?
:: Our friends both in Texas and Calgary. As a nomadic family, we depended on our friends a lot to help us get through very challenging circumstances last year. I can honestly say that we couldn’t have made it where we are right now without the support of our wonderful friends.

3. For what 2010 project, display, or outfit will you win the Best Visual Effects award?
:: Simple, my pregnancy. :) I didn’t have to wear a costume like antennas for tv on my head to provide visual effects. My baby bump says it all. :)

4. What terrific display of self-restraint or self-correction in 2010 earns you the Best Editor award?
:: I am not a very restrained person so, I am having trouble finding a particular display of self-restraint, haha!

5. Of these Best Picture nominees, which title could best serve as the title of your 2010: 127 Hours, Black Swan, The Fighter, Inception, The Kids are All Right, The King’s Speech, The Social Network, Toy Story 3, True Grit, or Winter’s Bone?
:: Inception. My life in 2010 was like a dream within a dream within a dream. :)

Connections

More Friday5!

1. Nowadays, just about everyone knows a couple who first met online. Among couples you know, who has the best story?
:: Among my friends, I actually do not know of any couple who met online. Does that mean that I’m too old and my friends are too old-fashioned for internet “connections”? :)

2. Who among your real-life acquaintances might you never have been friends with if you hadn’t gotten to know each other online first?
:: The wonderful wives of WifeSpeaks! The site is now defunct but the friendships live on! :)

3. Of people you know online only, who would you most like to meet in real life?
:: Lots of them! Most of the commenters on my personal blog have become good friends and I have yet to meet all of them in person.

4. In the past 365 days, what’s the longest you’ve gone without connecting in any way to the Internet, including email?
:: I honestly can’t remember a day when I haven’t logged in for a long time. That’s how connected I am. But then, Sunday usually is a no internet day for me. So that would probably be the answer – one day. :)

5. Who is the least-connected person you know in real life?
:: My mom, probably. She can’t even differentiate between a computer and a TV on a tv stand. But I’m slowly showing her the benefits of Facebook, haha!

Satellite TV

My family and I are big television watchers. Whenever we move to a new city or country, the first things we always have in our empty apartment is a TV as well as a satellite TV connection. My daughter has to have her animation channels, my husband his sports, and me my food and home improvement shows. And we just don’t get any kind of satellite connection, we prefer ones that have a great value for lots of channels, HD, and a DVR sometimes, too, like DirecTV.

In this day and age when information and entertainment help us cope easier with the fast-changing times, there really is no substitute for a reliable and affordable satellite tv service, especially if you have a huge HDTV that you would like to make the most out of. Just ask my hubby, he’ll tell you and then some. As for me, talk to me after a few hours – I just need to finish my Top Chef marathon. :)

Fire and Ice

To celebrate the coming of the New Year, my family and I drove downtown to participate in the Fire and Ice Event at the Calgary Olympic Plaza. We were hoping to catch the fireworks display later on, but in the meantime, we had fun with the activities the city had in store for the visitors.

Welcome 2011!

Fabulous ice sculptures galore!

Ice sculptor on-site.

My daughter was mesmerized by the guest figure-skaters. After being inspired by the skaters, I guess she won’t be aiming for health care jobs now.

Here’s us working on some crafts (if only to escape the -18C temp outside, hehe!). The finished product was a Christmas lantern.

While waiting for the fireworks, we had dinner first at Milestones Grill + Bar. The details of our meal could be found here at my other blog. We enjoyed our meal so much that we actually missed the fireworks, hehe!

It was a cold night indeed but our memories of our first new year in Calgary will always be a warm one.
