Late Nights

More Friday5!

1. What’s the best thing about being awake when the rest of the world seems to be sleeping?
:: The peace and quiet.

2. Where can you go when you get a case of the late-night munchies?
:: The kitchen pantry, hehe!

3. What open-all-night establishment has saved you from catastrophe, and what were the circumstances?
:: 7-11. I was craving for some hotdogs. Hubby was kind enough to drive down the block to get a couple for each of us. :)

4. What’s the worst thing about being awake when the rest of the world seems to be sleeping?
:: The peace and quiet could be quite deafening, too.

5. When you are up all night at home for whatever reason, what’s most likely to be on the television to keep you company?
:: A late night talk show re-run or some movie. As for me, I’d rather be in front of the computer monitors and surfing the net than watching TV.

Too Much Not Enough

More Friday5!

1. Who’s not as funny as he or she thinks?
:: In the Philippines, there’s a local TV host who thinks he’s the funniest, most indispensable guy in the world. His name is Willie Revillame and he’s, I think, the corniest, not to mention most arrogant TV personality I know.

2. What’s not as big a deal as everyone else seems to think?
:: American Idol. :P

3. What’s something people aren’t concerned enough about?
:: Drunk driving and driving while texting. I can’t condone something as irresponsible as driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs and, nowadays, distracted driving also.

4. What’s something in the grocery store that’s underrated?
:: Electronics. There are some good deals and varieties on electronics in the superstores, too. They might not have bel radar detectors there, though, but the electronics section could really give the huge electronics stores a run for their money.

5. What do you pay too much attention to?
:: Currently, my pregnancy. That’s all I think about every day. :)

Unrelated

More Friday5!

1. What’s your favorite kind of cracker?
:: Skyflakes! It doesn’t have a lot of vitamins in it but I love it, hehe!

2. What part of your residence gets the best natural lighting?
:: Our dining room. It has a huge picture window that lets in so much pretty light.

3. What song have you frequently listened to lately?
:: Lady Antebellum’s I Need You Now. Here’s the link to the Music Video if you’re not familiar with it.

4. What could you use a little break from?
:: Pregnancy heartburns. I have been having trouble sleeping at night because of this.

5. What’s going on in your town this weekend?
:: Nice, non-freezing weather. :)

Don’t Let Old Man Winter into Your Home!

Contribution by Stevie Kirby

Every year during the holiday season, we wrap gifts for our friends and relatives with possible hopes of receiving something in return. With the time and care we spend on selecting the perfect gift and wrapping it perfectly, why not spend the same amount of time and effort to winterize your home?

A few years ago, I learned the hard way what can happen for not taking the time to winterize my home completely. I never thought the pipes in my basement would freeze, but they did. Had I taken the time to wrap the pipes with molded foam or fiberglass insulation, I could have saved $400 by not having to hire a plumber!

Since I learned my lesson with the pipes, I decided to spend a little more money and purchased storm windows. While the storm windows cost $60 each, I have witnessed an average savings of 20% in home engery costs over the past three years since ive consulted www.energysavings.com.

One important, but simple, method of winterizing your home is to replace the furnace filter. Your furnace filter can gather all sorts of dust over the summer, thus making your furnace less efficient. A clean furnace filter will let air flow freely and efficiently from your furnace to your vents.

So please, take the opportunity to learn from my mistakes. Winterize your home!

My Little Goalie

Here is my daughter trying on a goalie mask for size. She’s definitely had no problems getting into the swing of things here in our snowy new home. She has been asking me to teach her how to ice skate, with a goal of, I guess, becoming a hockey goalie someday. Where did she get the idea? From watching the hockey finals on TV, of course!

From badminton athlete a few months ago to hockey player now – she wants it all. As a mom, I’m going to be content to just sit back, put my Ray Bans on, and watch my daughter shine at whatever she wants to be. :)

Super!

More Friday5!

1. There are superheroes named Superman, Superfly, and Supergirl. Based on your performance this past week in whatever you do, what would have been your Super_____ name?
:: It would be Super Preggy! I’m more hormonal than a speeding bullet, much bigger than a locomotive, and able to eat tall building-sized food in a single bound.

2. This week, what has been superterrific and what has been superlame?
:: Superterrific: the wonderful sunshine despite the snow. Superlame: below freezing temps with matching windchill.

3. Which of Superman’s abilities would have been the most useful this week?
:: His Superhuman strength and speed, so I could plow all of the snow in the neighborhood and make the roads much safer for everyone.

4. What do you most expect will be super this weekend?
:: A huge sale on baby things would be super nice!

5. What are your thoughts this week about the coming Super Bowl?
:: Rooting for the Steelers! :)

Expiration

More Friday5!

1. What was the most recent thing to go past its expiration date in your pantry?
:: My daughter recently discovered that our orange juice was expiring in two days, yet we had like almost the whole gallon of it still unconsumed. What did we do? We chugged that almost-gallon within two days, and sure enough we had the worst heartburns ever. :)

2. When does your excitement about the new year usually expire?
:: Once I get the hang of writing down the correct year on my cheques, hehe!

3. What valued possession seems to be on the verge of expiration?
:: I can’t think of any. Anyway, valued possessions should never have any expiration dates in our hearts and minds.

4. When does your current driver’s license expire?
:: I just renewed mine so I’m still waiting for it in the mail so I don’t really know what expiration date they’ve given me yet. Hopefully it’ll arrive before my comfy mbt shoes do.

5. What subscription, membership, permit, policy, or other dated document are you most likely to allow to expire next without renewal?
:: Our magazine subscriptions, car insurance, and sports club memberships in the US. We’ve left that life behind now. :)

Winter

More Friday5!

1. Where have you been that could best be described as a winter wonderland?
:: Right here in Calgary, AB. :) You can’t get any more wintry wonderlandy than here.

2. In what way might you describe this as the winter of your discontent?
:: Our move up to Canada was a real challenge. The holidays were unusually quiet and white, and the cold, dark, dreary days didn’t help either. But we are slowly getting to the “content” part. Spring will surely be better.

3. What was the last wintergreen-flavored thing you tasted?
:: Bubblegum!

4. Is there anyone in your life who could be nicknamed Old Man Winter?
:: I can’t honestly think of anybody. Except for this guy who tried to entice us to get short term health insurance Blue Cross products. He’s typically Santa Claus-ish, but not necessarily that old.

5. Now that the holidays have passed, is there anything good about the winter that remains?
:: Honestly, not really, haha! I can’t wait for the weather to warm up!
