Tagged [Movies]

Another tag from Duke via Facebook! Thanks, sis! I am going to love this one, for sure!

Don’t take too long to think about it. Fifteen movies you’ve seen that will always stick with you. First fifteen you can recall in no more than fifteen minutes. Tag fifteen friends, including me because I’m interested in seeing what movies my friends choose. (To do this, go to your Notes tab on your profile page, paste rules in a new note, cast your fifteen picks, and tag people in the note — upper right hand side.

This is not in any order.

1. The Wedding Singer
2. 50 First Dates
3. PS I Love You (The Sharon Cuneta movie, not Hilary Swank’s)
4. The Karate Kid
5. The Princess Bride
6. The Bucket List
7. Love Affair
8. The American President
9. Unbreakable
10. Good Will Hunting
11. Before Sunrise
12. Gattaca
13. Back To The Future (Yes, including Back To The Future 3 with its cowboy cardboard display set, hehe!)
14. Forrest Gump
15. Full Metal Jacket

And just like that, fifteen! I could have written a longer list, haha! :)

Serious Reads

What’s the most serious book you’ve read recently?

I haven’t been reading as much as I’d want to lately. However, before this literature drought, I’ve had the chance to read Autobiography of a Face by Lucy Grealy. It’s largely about her battle, not only with cancer, but also with rejection because of the disfigurement of her face caused by her condition.

The following is from Publisher’s Weekly:

Diagnosed at age nine with Ewing’s sarcoma, a cancer that severely disfigured her face, Grealy lost half her jaw, recovered after two and half years of chemotherapy and radiation, then underwent plastic surgery over the next 20 years to reconstruct her jaw. This harrowing, lyrical autobiographical memoir, which grew out of an award-winning article published in Harper’s in 1993, is a striking meditation on the distorting effects of our culture’s preoccupation with physical beauty. Extremely self-conscious and shy, Grealy endured insults and ostracism as a teenager in Spring Valley, N.Y. At Sarah Lawrence College in the mid-1980s, she discovered poetry as a vehicle for her pent-up emotions. During graduate school at the University of Iowa, she had a series of unsatisfying sexual affairs, hoping to prove she was lovable. No longer eligible for medical coverage, she moved to London to take advantage of Britain’s socialized medicine, and underwent a 13-hour operation in Scotland. Grealy now lives in New York City. Her discovery that true beauty lies within makes this a wise and healing book.

To me this hits pretty close to home, especially since a member of my family has also been battling Mesothelioma cancer for a few years now and we acknowledge both his suffering and his strength during these times. I would recommend this read to everyone.

Electronic Nanny

San-Myers_0001

When my daughter is quiet, you can pretty much deduce what she’s up to. This is her, totally engrossed with our Nintendo DS Lite. I know, I know, I shouldn’t be exposing her to too much video games this early but, what can I do? I have to admit that I am a gamer myself and I love to share this passion of mine with her. Besides, all the games she plays are heavily monitored by my husband and me, and we usually only resort to it when we urgently need her to be occupied (i.e. quiet, haha!)

My husband, of course, uses this, too. He gets a lot of tips for his real life sports, like golf training aids and tennis tricks. However, he’s always third in line as a user (after me and Ninna, hehe!) and he’s fine with it (i.e. no choice!) :P

10 Favorite TV Characters

Here are my 10 favorite sounds.

1. Marie from Everybody Loves Raymond.
She always cracks me up. I’m really glad my mother-in-law is nothing like her and I also hope, though, that I won’t become her in the future. :D

2. Hiro Nakamura from Heroes
Such a lovable character. I love his powers, too.

3. The Two and A Half Men
I couldn’t choose just one among them, they’re all funny! They always have me rolling on the floor mats laughing.

4. McGyver
The last boy scout. :)

5. Horatio Caine from CSI: Miami
I know that some people don’t really like David Caruso’s character (or would prefer the other heads of CSIs). But to me, he’s the one who makes the show click. I love his one-liners! And his trademark sunglasses. :)

6. House
Who doesn’t love this guy?

7. Eli Stone
I’m sad that the show has been canceled. I loved it so much!

8. Peter Bishop from Fringe
Joshua Jackson is perfect for this role. He grew up nicely too. :D

9. Merlin
This is my current addiction. I love the Arthurian legends and their take on Merlin is fresh.

10. Bert from Sesame Street
Pigeons. Oatmeal. Bottle caps. Some kids love cookie monster, or big bird, or elmo. I love Bert.

Sand and Sun, Part 2

But wait, our vacation wasn’t over yet!

After our day at Sanibel, we spent our Sunday again at the beach. This time, we drove to Ft. Myers. If Sanibel was serene and secluded, Ft. Myers beach was hip and happening!

myers pier

The water wasn’t really as clear as we hoped it would be. I guess, its true that there are certain times of the year when the water isn’t too good. But then again, who’s to stop us? :D

myers family

We even got one nice lady to take a family picture of us. Proof that hubby and I are in dire need of appetite suppressants, haha!

And because we were at the beach at noon, it was so hot! Hubby had to carry Ninna from our beach umbrella down to the water because the sand was too hot for her to walk on.

After a while, we just gave up because we couldn’t handle the heat. To cool us down, we took a walk on the pier and basked in the beautiful views of the ocean.

It was a hot, tiring, wet, but wonderful weekend all around. Can’t wait to see what hubby and I will come up with for this coming weekend. :)

Sand and Sun, Part 1

Hubby and I were browsing through the netbooks in the mall the other day when we suddenly decided that we needed a much more exciting way to pass the time. So last weekend, we crossed off a “place to see before you die” from the list by going to lovely Sanibel Island. We went to two beaches, Bowman’s Beach and Lighthouse Beach, and ended up spending more time at Lighthouse.

Sanibel is famous for their shelling beaches. Ninna had a lot of fun doing her “sanibel stoop” as she stooped her way along the coast looking for her perfect shells.

And then, there was the swimming.

The water was shallow enough for Ninna to swim around by herself. She was really so excited! And I was excited, too! No clinging to me for dear life this time. :)

And then, there was the rain.

It cut our swimming short but that didn’t mean we couldn’t still play in the rain. :)

And to end our perfect Saturday on the islands, we drove to nearby Captiva Island to catch the perfect sunset.
