Assignment #6: Book Meme
Because I asked for it…
I’ve been tagged by Duke with this Book Meme, oh, around August of last year. I’m sorry I’m getting to it only now - I’ve been quite fully booked, hehe. :D
Time to turn a page…
Books that changed your life?
:: The Bible, of course!
:: The Prophet (Kahlil Gibran), very simple philosophy yet very inspiring.
:: The Fountainhead (Ayn Rand), if you can finish this book, you can get some neat ideas on Objectivism from it.
:: The Republic (Plato), studied it in college but remained in my mind even after.
:: Einstein’s Dreams (Alan Lightman), yeah I know, him again. The book gave me a totally fresh appreciation of physics.
:: The Little Mermaid (Hans Christian Andersen), because as a child, it helped me see that not all fairy tales have happy endings.
Books you have read more than once?
:: My daughter’s storybooks! Every day and every night, actually! Books by Dr. Seuss, Margaret Wise Brown, Karen Katz, Nick Jr., and nursery rhymes by Mother Goose work for us. :)
Books you would want on a desert island?
:: War and Peace (Leo Tolstoy), I’ve always started it but never finished it.
:: Mission Earth (L. Ron Hubbard), to find out what the heck Tom Cruise is going crazy over. So to speak.
:: Gravity’s Rainbow (Thomas Pynchon), got as far as 1/8 of the book but I have yet to try harder.
:: Remembrance of Things Past (Marcel Proust), because it is long.
:: A Suitable Boy (Vikram Seth), because it is also long.
:: Clarissa (Samuel Richardson), because it is also long. I mean, when I’m stuck on a desert island, what better way to help pass the time than to have these super duper extra long reads at hand?
One book that made you laugh?
:: Confessions of a Shopaholic (Sophie Kinsella), or actually the entire Shopaholic series.
One book that made you cry?
:: Jude the Obscure (Thomas Hardy), among others. Three words: “Little Father Time”.
One book you wish you had written?
:: Harry Potter, hehe!
One book you wish had never been written?
:: Holy Blood, Holy Grail (Michael Baigent, Richard Leigh, and Henry Lincoln), not because it is badly written or what, but mostly because its publication shook, confused, and debased the faith of a lot of people by bringing untoward speculation on the life and legacy of Jesus. Wala lang.
One book you are currently reading?
:: The Nanny Diaries (Emma Mc Laughlin), in preparation for the movie.
One book you have been meaning to read?
:: Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norell (Susanna Clarke). (If my bookmark is true) I stopped reading at the 228th page because I got waylaid by other (shorter) books. It is still sitting on my shelf a year after I bought the 800-page paperback at Costco, hehe. I promise to finish it, though. Really!
And that, friends, is my list. How about yours? Care to share?

Meeya, I swear I don’t read books. I do go to a bookstore but you know what’s my favourite? Architecture of houses and kitchens inspired by Asian designers. I am somewhat lack of passion when it comes to reading novels or other stuff. I’m mostly stucked with the Men’s, GQ magazines para lang tumulo laway sa next best thing to buy.
Ay oo Jude the Obscure made me cry, after I read that I think na upset ako talaga.
Mia, I do remember you and your Sweet Dreams books. Nagbabasa din naman ako ng Sweet Dreams at Sweet Valley High noon ah, but unlike you, I didn’t graduate into the classics. Hehe. I swear, I really have to make sure that before my eyes get bad (which they used to be but not anymore, thanks to laser surgery!), I have to have a book for each of the category in your post. ;)
Oh I did remember, I was reading this novel by Tony Parson’s “Mand and Boy” it’s about being a Son and being a Father - it was sad but halfway, I got bored. The author has another book prior to that, “one for my baby”. I’ll take your advice but you know, I always look for suspense-thriller that kind of stuff.
Still, I want my shelved filled with Books of beautiful houses - its inspiring to have a nice house I see in those books someday (dreams on!).
